Fred Armisen was born Fereydun Robert Armisen to Hildegardt Mirabal and Fereydun Herbert Armisen on December 4, 1966 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, although he was raised in Brazil and New York. Armisen is of American ethnicity but of mixed ancestry; Venezuela through his mother and Germany/Korea through his father.
As a child, Armisen was a fan of rock bands like Devo and The Clash, which made him want to become a musician. He formed a band with his friends in high school, but the band later disbanded while he was going to college. Fred still hoped to be able to achieve his dream, but he wanted to finish his studies at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan first. Somewhere down the line, however, he chose to drop out of school to fully focus on his music career.
Chicago turned out to be Fred Armisens’ choice destination when he moved to town in 1988 and joined the punk rock band Trenchmouth as a drummer. Later, in the 90s, he started playing background drums for the performance art company Blue Man Group. During this time, Armisen began to show interest in an acting career. He managed to land roles on the television series Crank Yankers and Adult Swim, which directly landed him his first starring role on Saturday Night Live in 2002. Two years after his first appearance, series creator Lorne Michaels, was promoted to acting repertoire and making him only the second Latino cast member on the show.
Thanks to the exposure received by SNL, Armisen was now able to appear in several Hollywood productions such as EuroTrip (2004), Cop Out (2010), and Our Family Wedding (2010). He then left the comedy series in 2014 as the third longest-serving cast member, but continues to appear in movies and series while listening to music.
