Sad News – Jim Walsh passed away Thursday night. Jim was my mentor for the past 23 years. He was a visionary in business, law, development and much more. He was a co-founder of VGM with his best friend Van G Miller, and the two of them not only had a lot of fun but also built an amazing business. Also Jim redeveloped much of downtown Waterloo with purpose and vision. Funny, smart, understanding, proud dad and grandpa, bold and larger than life. Rest easy now, Jim.Gary Kroeger
Our community has lost a giant among us. Jim Walsh was everything wonderful written about him and more. He could also be a bit irrascible but that was his honesty on display. My personal favorite memory of Jim was from my restaurant, Figaro Figaro. Jim hadn’t made a reservation on a packed Friday night but I found him a table. It was a small table in the midst of other small tables and he didn’t like it but he made no fuss. Before service started he handed me a business card. I thought that was odd since we knew each other. I flipped over the card and it said: “NO singing at my table!”I laughed and promised him no singing. Unfortunately every table around him came specifically for the singing. Jim took it in stride but I knew it wasn’t an experience he loved. I share this as an illustration of his honesty and the fact that he made every effort in our community to try everything. Even things he didn’t care for. I respected him greatly and his generosity is legendaryOur thoughts and prayers are with Walsh’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Jim Walsh – your spirit, dedication, and vision will not be forgotten.
